Every Breath U Take (2012)

Every Breath U Take (Mae Czarina Cruz, 2012)

One fateful Valentine’s night, virginal Majoy (Angelica Panganiban), whose time-bound ovaries are severely in need of a suitable sperm donor lest they never be used again, meets Leo (Piolo Pascual), a bigshot real estate broker whose skill in wooing women can only be matched by his aversion to serious relationships, in the restaurant where she was supposed to meet her Valentine’s date. Majoy’s absentee date is Ji-soon (Ryan Bang), a hopelessly romantic Korean man whose long-awaited and probably well-deserved opportunity to prove his love to Majoy was foiled when on the night of their first date, his car crashes into another car, which just so happens to be driven by the eldest brother (Smokey Manoloto) of Leo’s latest scorned sexual conquest (Wendy Valdez), who, in a streak of post-break-up insanity, contracts the rest of his male siblings (Joross Gamboa and Carlos Agassi) to do everything they can to force Leo back so that they can be wed.

Every Breath U Take is more a carefree screwball than a careless rom-com. Since Star Cinema has cornered the Philippine market with its generic romances that offer a dash of humor and a sliver of drama, it has always been careful in maintaining the formula of unbelievably pretty protagonists, played by actors and actresses who are marketed as love teams, with particular backstories suddenly confronted with the utmost dilemma of falling in love with each other. Thankfully, the film courageously skips key elements of the formula to inject an internal logic of well-timed guffaws and out-of-this world coincidences that are not only unbelievable and farfetched but also fittingly entertaining.

In the film, the characters do fall in love, yet that brand of love they profess is hardly the noble and idealistic type that the mainstream studio repeatedly espouses in its products. The film’s brand of love is not befuddled by weepy needs for fulfilment, whether it comes from the self, parents, or society, but is simply more straightforward, or if we are to be blunt about it, more shallow. Majoy simply wants to find her fated prince charming before her ovaries stop producing eggs. Leo simply wants that diversion where his land-selling skills can also be applied. The other characters are similarly situated. Yet despite the unabashed lack of motivation for their respective romantic endeavors, Mae Czarina Cruz was successful to maintain the same swooning sheen that it shares with Star Cinema’s other romances.

Even the casting of Panganiban and Pascual seems to be unburdened with the ulterior motive of establishing a love duo that would hopefully earn for themselves a few more films together and for the studio several more millions of pesos worth of sold tickets. It feels like Panganiban and Pascual were casted not because their pairing can sell the most tickets and can usher in another lucrative pairing involving very bankable celebrities but simply because they fit their roles. The lack of chemistry between the leads is made up mostly by their willingness to take part in the experimentation.

Panganiban, for example, becomes the antithesis of the Star Cinema heroine, which is simply a character that is so written to be played by any actress because that character is simply a vessel of whatever trait that is forwarded by the usually thin narratives of the typical Star Cinema rom-com. The character of Majoy seems to be precisely a Panganiban vehicle. Although not in the same vein as the ones that are usually lauded by critics and the press in their yearly acting ceremonies, Majoy’s character is an acting piece that requires Panganiban’s fascinating ability to mix the unassuming naiveté of a sexual first-timer and the desperation of a libidinous nympho to great comedic effect. Pascual, on the other hand, gamely allows himself to be objectified.

In reality, Every Breath U Take is nothing to be excited for. It is also nothing to be ashamed of. It is what it is, a well-produced, amply directed, and satisfactorily acted romp. In a climate where the well-fed and patronized mainstream producers have gotten used to the comfort of using less and less imagination and more and more reliance on the elementary parts of a sure-fire hit, a film like this, with all its exaggerations and unforgivably apparent lapses in reality in exchange for laughs and wonderment is as invaluable as a breath of fresh air.

CUE: Modern Barbecue

Here I am trying out new things again. I went to CUE: MODERN BARBECUE at the new wing of Bonifacio High Street and all I can say that this is your "cue" to try it out. If you're a meat eater, head on to Cue AS SOON AS YOU CAN!

What should you order? Here's a portion of the menu for you to see. There are loads of choices! The appetizers are already to die for!

While you're waiting or still checking out the menu, you get POPCORN! It has a special Barbecue powder that's tangy and a bit spicy which is excellent.

Now here are my recommendations. I'm not a food expert. I'm not a food blogger but just trust me on this one because it is just superb! The CUE Bone Marrow and Steak Tacos. They're to die for! It's very indulgent but it's just the best taco I've ever tasted my entire life. I'm sorry but it's true. Ubod nang sarap talaga ng tacos na to!

It has other fillings you can put like corn and this special pesto/herby type sauce that's just excellent!

If there's one thing you'll order, it's gotta be the steak tacos!

The House Burger with Sweet Potato Fries! In all honesty, this CUE House Burger can give the other popular burgers in the Philippines a run for its money. Why? The cheese and special sauce inside was AMAZING. No need for ketchup... This House Burger gets it DONE!

The Sweet Potato Fries... KAMOTE FRIES! C'mon, let's be real. The Kamote fries are actually pretty tasty too! It has balanced saltiness and sweetness that's really a great marriage inside the mouth. You know how you don't finish your fries at times? Well.. You'll finish these for sure.

My other recommendations.

BEEF BELLY. Cue's version of the Beef Belly is quite nice when it comes to the blend of flavors. It's just right! It's extremely indulgent so this is best shared with friends. This also comes with Horse Radish on the side.

The Chili Monggo. CUE has a twist to the Chili! We usually have chili with the normal beans right? This one I'll recommend to those who like it really spicy. I'll be honest that I only took one spoon of this because I couldn't handle the spice. But hey, it was a good twist!

So there. Now you know where to eat this weekend! :) Cue: Modern Barbecue is on the lower level of the building across Kabisera in Bonifacio High Street.

May #RAK Wrap-Up Post

I LOVE R.A.K! I love receiving and sending out books. I get super excited to do both!

This month, I was not able to send any books or swags. Someone, however, decided to send me a book.

Stephanie from A Dream Within A Dream said she would send me Fever by Lauren DeStefano. I have not received it yet but I'm super excited! Thank you Stephanie!

UPDATE: I forgot to include this one!
Jen from Jen Ryland / YA Romantics was very sneaky! She sent me Last Rite by Lisa Desrochers (!!!!!) for this month's #RAK and an early birthday present for next month! Dare I say she's my favorite blogger? :D

Next month is my birthday month! I'm excited to do #RAK again! Cross your fingers, you might be the lucky person that will receive a book from me :)

Linky Love in May

Photopedia image by Anna Strumillo
I do love seeing what links people find fascinating enough to pass on to others in their social networks.  I find Twitter particularly useful for this, though Facebook and Google+ aren't far behind.

And, lucky you, I've been keeping track of the links I liked best.  Don't ask me how I found them...sometimes one link would send me to another, and so on.  But I do want to thank my social network for sending these gems along to me.

Here's my linky love for May (in random order):

  • I love this cartoon about literary devices.  My favorite: the Irony Board, though the Random Analogy Generator is pretty funny too.
  • Are you writing a book about digging a hole straight through the earth?  Well, here is an antipodal map that will show you exactly where you'd come out the other end.  For you U.S. people, sorry to disappoint, but it won't be China.  Just sayin'.
  • The Merit Badger has created merit badges just for writers.  Never fear, non-writers.  There are merit badges for readers and some for holidays, too.  I love these.  I am so going to make* a bandelo one of these days, and put my very own writing merit badges on it.
  • Harold Underdown's website, The Purple Crayon, is an amazing resource for anyone writing for children.  But my favorite part of his site is the Who's Moving Where? page.  If you are obsessed about keeping up with the editorial staff changes at children's book publishers, this is the page for you.
  • Need help with names?  Serendipity is a site that has random generators.  I've had this bookmarked for years.  There are place name generators, people name generators, and even a fantasy title generator.  It's particularly helpful for you fantasy writers out there.  Cool beans.

There you go, dear readers.  I hope you enjoy some of those links!

*Okay, not really.  Though I am rather handy with a sewing machine.

The Milla in Manila Experience

I've been fortunate to meet a lot of comic book people from the international scene because of Comic-Con and National Book Store. I've met Hickman, Quesada, Loeb, even Liefeld in San Diego. I met David Lloyd and CB Cebulski here courtesy of NBS. But the one guy I really had the chance to talk to and discuss fanboy things was Mark Millar. THE Mark Millar.

Shame on you if you don't know him. But for the sake of information, he's one of the best comic book writers/ creators in history. He wrote and created WANTED, KICK-ASS, CHOSEN, SUPERIOR, NEMESIS, THE SECRET SERVICE and SUPERCROOKS. For Marvel, he wrote the best selling CIVIL WAR and THE ULTIMATES just to name a few.

He signed my Chosen book

The man is a genuine nice guy and he's a true fanboy. You can discuss ANYTHING with him. ANYTHING.

To be honest, I felt like a groupie when he was here. I hung out with him, Leinil Yu, and the kind people of National Book Store.

I was invited to a dinner for him Friday along with Jonty and a number Filipino Artists like Harvey, Carlo, Jason, Heubert and Ian. The man sat next to me at dinner and that's when I found out how extra cool he was! He knows so much about movies plus he definitely knows his comics. Para siyang kabarkada mo lang. Seriously. He's like another fanboy in the group and finding out that he's down to earth makes him so much cooler, credible, and respectable. But what struck me the most was how polite he was. He'd never forget to say thanks to a waiter or say please. Such great manners! Was he funny? I laughed so many times at his stories and ideas. Too bad I can't divulge on the topics we discussed.

Saturday was the day of the interview, Jonty and I visited the NBS Glorietta 5 branch to interview him for "These Aren't the Droids You're Looking For" column (Out Friday in The Philippine STAR, YOUNG STAR Section) We got to ask all the nerdy questions we could ask and he even told us about Hollywood stuff you don't get to hear everyday. I brought a copy of Trouble #1 which was the first Millar book I read. Being a Spidey fan, I just had to have it signed. He told me that I was the first one to have him sign a Trouble #1. After that I went to Komikon to moderate some panels. But my interview ended late so I need to say thanks to Tony Tuason of Flipgeeks for covering for me.

Surprise! Surprise! What KOMIKON fans didn't know was that there was a preview of The Milla in Manila! Mark Millar visited Komikon for a special guest appearance!

Who's that guy in the lower right? :)

Sunday was the BIG DAY. Mr. Millar had been so jet lagged the whole weekend plus he had tons of interviews. Yet, the professionalism he showed was just amazing. He signed like 1000+ books and he signed for all those who went to the event. I was happy with the fan turn out! A lot of fans really went to the NBS event to see him! It was probably the most successful and biggest comic event in Manila. EVER. I stayed at the sidelines of the stage just relaxing. Yes I have hosted some NBS events but someone with more experience and just as geeky had to be the guy. That's why I was happy it was RJ Ledesma who did it! Before the signing started, I called Mr. Millar and said my goodbye. I wasn't sure when I'd see him again. I said thank you for everything and for visiting the Philippines. It was really such a privilege and blessing meeting and hanging out with the man himself.

Happy Fanboy courtesy @nbsalert

Monster Crowd!

Fans raising their copies of Supercrooks #1

Fan Art courtesy of the awesome Apol Sta Maria

Thank you National Book Store for making this possible! I had the most awesome experience. Imagine a fanboy hanging out with one of his heroes? Man... I'll never forget it.

I don't know if Mr. Millar will ever stumble upon this small blog but Mr. Millar, MABUHAY KA! It was really such an honor :)

He was actually the one who thought of wearing my glasses

THE NIGHT SERIES - Book One by Lisa Kessler

Title: Night Walker
Author: Lisa Kessler
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Book Description:
He gave up his soul for a second chance to love her…

Two and a half centuries ago, Calisto Terana lost everything when a zealous priest murdered the woman he loved. Now, desperate for another chance to love her, he wants redemption for the mistake that cost her life.

She’s haunted by dreams of her own death…

After catching her fiance with another woman, Kate Bradley returns to San Diego to clear her head. The last thing she needs is romance, but after meeting Calisto she’s drawn to him in ways she doesn’t understand.

They’ve waited in the shadows for centuries…

Calisto has no doubt Kate is the reincarnation of his lost love, but the Fraternidad Del Fuego Santo has a new watcher with dark ambitions of his own. As old enemies reemerge and a new threat arises, the betrayal that enslaved Calisto to the night might destroy the only woman he’s ever loved again.

Hi everyone –

Thanks to Arianne for letting me visit her beautiful blog again! :)

She asked me to choose my favorite vampire (Besides my yummy Calisto! LOL) and if I would let him “turn” me…

Such a tough choice!  Let me go through some of my all-time favorite vampires…

First off, we have Lestat from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. He was my first vampire love.  So wicked and evil, and yet there was a sexy and possibly tender side to him.  He enjoyed the power and wasn’t afraid to abuse it if it suited him.  He liked being a vampire and I liked him for his badness! LOL

And another favorite is David from The Lost Boys.  Keifer Sutherland made a super yummy vampire bad boy.  Lost Boys is still one of my all-time favorite vampire movies, and I write to the soundtrack often.

I’ve also had a long love affair with Marius from The Vampire Chronicles.  He lured me in with his wisdom and cunning, and his long blond hair and bright blue eyes  teased me too.  After I read “Pandora” he became one of my all-time favorite vampires…  (Great book!  You should read it!)

So if I can’t choose Calisto, who would it be?   This may surprise you, but it’s a new vampire from Jeri Smith-Ready’s WVMP Vampire series.  His name is Shane.  He became a vampire in the 90’s so he’s not an ancient, but he’s a passionate musician who kills me book after book with his complex hotness.  He writes songs that’ll tear your heart out, and he’s strong when he needs to be and tender when it’s least expected.

And if you haven’t read the WVMP Radio Vampire series, start with Wicked Game…  You’ll love Shane.  He’s a totally unexpected vampire crush! :)

Now would I let him turn me?  Since I write vampires myself, I’ve given that question a lot of thought, and the bottom line is probably no.  It would literally kill me to outlive all my family and friends.  If we could all be immortal I’d go for it, but otherwise, I’d rather stay mortal.

So who is your vampire boyfriend?  I’d love to hear!
Lisa

Movie Review: The Tooth Fairy

This movie made me BELIEVE!

There was so much lesson I learned in this movie. How about a list?

  • Children fantasies are important to fuel their imagination - I believe this to be true now that I think about it. When I was growing up, I didn't have any fantasies to believe in. No tooth fairy or anything. I believed in Santa Claus for one second and then I saw it all unfold one year and realized Santa was my mom. So, as a result, I have barely an imagination. I hope I can make up for it.
  • You can do anything as long as you believe - I think this is very true. Just follow your dreams.
  • "What if" is not always bad - I see the bright side now. What ifs help people move forward and risk certain things, and by risking, sometimes, happiness comes out of it. We all just need to be patient.

Okay, I will stop making a list before I get cheesy. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was amazing in this movie. This movie is the reason why I love watching movies that are usually meant for children. I feel like it always teaches the audience something useful. I absolutely enjoyed this movie and would absolutely recommend it! Check out some photos from the movie!

Product I Regret Buying: Milani Liquif'eye

I needed a new eyeliner and decided to try something new. I decided to purchase Milani Liquif'eye Metallic Eyeliner in Black. I got mine for about $6 at Walmart.

Pros:
  • Creamy
  • Great for lining the upper lids
  • Long-wearing
Cons:
  • Almost impossible to sharpen
  • If used on the water line, it bleeds later in the day = raccoon look
  • Hard to remove at night

I discovered after using this eyeliner that I personally don't like metallic eyeliners for everyday look. They look way too much for a natural everyday look.

So, if you have any suggestions for an affordable eyeliner, hopefully less than $10 and either a pencil or automatic liner, please let me know in the comments.

No more creamy liners for me unless I figure out how to sharpen them properly, and no, I don't plan on buying a special sharpener any time soon.

Movie Review: The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

Not having reliable internet and a whole lot of friends made a boring weekend. Yep, that was my Saturday. So, I asked my roommates to see if they had any movies I could borrow to keep me company until I decide to do something productive in my life - like go to the library and return the DVDs I borrowed. Anyway, this movie was the only movie I had not seen in their pile of 5 movies so I thought it would be the first one I would watch. I was pleasantly surprised!

The four characters were so different from each other, it was a wonder they were all best friends. I enjoyed seeing their individual adventures and heartaches throughout the movie.

Lena - she was the awkward girl who was conservative and afraid to break out of her shell. She was also an artist. She went to Greece to visit her grandparents and there she met a handsome guy names Kostos. He sure was attractive. Something about him was very appealing and their story was so adorable. When they were talking late at night in his boat, I thought they were the cutest couple. And of course they just had to kiss.

Tibby - she was the girl that couldn't care less about the world and just seemed miserable half the time. She was also a filmmaker. Then, she met Bailey. The first time they met, Bailey passed out in the discount store that Tibby was working at. After that, Bailey was practically attached to Tibby's hip. Bailey was the light in Tibby's life. She was always happy and knew what to say to people to make them feel better. I wish I could be like that. Bailey was Tibby's miracle.

Carmen - she was the Puerto Rican girl who went to North Carolina to spend the summer with her father. She was so excited until her father dropped the bomb: He has a new family and they are getting married soon. Carmen was miserable and I felt really bad when they were at the fitting for the bridesmaid dress. She was curvy while her father's new family were slim. Needless to say, things got heated and she ended up going back home.

Bridget - she was the hot girl that hid behind her smiles. She knew what she wanted and she went after it no matter what. I really admired her confidence and the way she approached certain situations even though some of them ended up in rejection. Her mom (if I'm not mistaken) committed suicide and left her alone with her dad. She acted happy and bubbly to escape the grief but it caught up with her anyway.

Overall, this movie was heartwarming and full of awesome moments. If you haven't seen it, I totally recommend it for a girl's night in :)

For those who have seen the movie, what did you think? Tell me in the comments!
